The Third Reconstruction
October 11, 2022
Peniel Joseph is a scholar, teacher, author, and public voice on race issues. His most recent book describes recent racial justice initiatives as a Third Reconstruction. Joseph argues that the new struggle for justice and equality for Black Americans is as significant as the movement that arose after the Civil War and the Civil Rights era during the 1950s and ’60s.
While the advances of this period labeled the Black Lives Matter era are meaningful, at least one review of the book considers the first Reconstruction and the Civil Rights era as a higher bar than the “Third Reconstruction.”
