Meet Min Jin Lee
March 22, 2022
This introduction to Korean novelist Min Jin Lee includes the sculpture Boy with Thorn (also named Spinario). The ancient work of artist Antico is displayed at The Met.
From the perspective of a literary artist, Lee reflects on the sculpture and the sculptor. She observes an ordinary boy with an ordinary problem. “It wasn’t about a triumph or a tragedy. It was really about the daily struggle of what you’re trying to do.” Although the thorn might not be visible, it has a debilitating impact. Lee speaks of moral purpose and pushing culture, but makes no mention of racism. However, it’s easy to make a correlation between racism and the thorn.
Lee’s books are Free Food for Millionaires (2007) and Pachinko (2017).
