Fisk Jubilee Singers

Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, was founded in 1866 for African-American students. In 1871 the school’s treasurer and music teacher decided to create a tour with a choir known as the Fisk Jubilee Singers. The tour was created with the hope of raising money to address the school’s financial concerns.

The love, dignity, and passion of the spirituals was new to white patrons who had only seen black people on stage in minstrel shows. The speculative venture was a success and the Fisk Jubilee Singers are credited with having a significant role in Spirituals capturing a meaningful place in American music.
