Confronting Truth

The 1619 Project is a long-form journalism venture that marked the 400th anniversary of African slaves arriving in America to be sold to colonists. The first published work from the project appeared in The New York Times Magazine in August 2019. The project was developed by Nikole Hannah-Jones along with writers from The New York Times and the New York Times Magazine.

The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story is a book released last month as an expansion of the work. The volume includes essays, poems, and works of fiction with numerous writers contributing.

The video excerpt in this feature starts with Robin Roberts asking Nikole Hannah-Jones how we as a nation can discuss race in a way that moves the discussion forward.
