African Americans at the Kentucky Derby

Last Saturday Kendrick Carmouche was the first Black jockey to compete in the Kentucky Derby since 2013. Carmouche rode Bourbonic and finished 13th.
Our featured video this week looks back to the first Kentucky Derby in 1875 when 13 of the 15 jockeys were African American. Fifteen of the first 28 runnings of the Kentucky Derby were won by African-American jockeys. They dominated the early years of thoroughbred racing in the United States and were widely regarded as the best in the world.
As Seeing Color shares vignettes from U.S. history, we intend this to provide a framework for greater understanding and a springboard to promote engagement with antiracism initiatives today.
