Jeremy Lin: "We're Tired"
April 6, 2021
His explosive performance was given the name “Linsanity” in February 2012 when the NBA New York Knicks basketball team began putting Jeremy Lin into the starting lineup. Now in 2021 Jeremy Lin plays in the G League for the Santa Cruz Warriors. And Lin is back in the news after he decided to report being called “coronavirus” on the basketball court.
Lin was the first American of Chinese or Taiwanese descent to play in the NBA, and is one of the few Asian Americans to have played in the league. He was the first Asian American to win an NBA championship, having done so with the Toronto Raptors in 2019.
Jeremy Lin’s parents emigrated to the United States from Taiwan in the mid-1970s. He grew up in Palo Alto, California, where he was named basketball play of the year as a high school senior. As early as the sixth grade he faced racist comments when playing basketball games outside the Bay Area.
Throughout his college and professional basketball career Lin has been subjected to slurs, stereotypes, and incorrect assumptions. Recently Lin shared a video essay on the rise of hate speech and racist attacks against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
