Meet Joy Harjo
March 30, 2021
Joy Harjo is the 23rd Poet Laureate of the United States and only the second person to be named for a third term in that role. She is the first Native American to serve as the nation’s Poet Laureate.
I addition to being a writer, Harjo is a musician, dancer, and educator. Jeffrey Brown of the PBS News Hour interviews Harjo in this clip from a September 2019 feature.
“The literature of the aboriginal people of North America defines America,” writes Joy Harjo. “It is not exotic. The concerns are particular, yet often universal.”
