The Doctrine of Discovery
November 24, 2020
The doctrine of discovery (or discovery doctrine) is a concept that legitimized the claim to any land "discovered" by European Christian monarchs. In attitude, practice, and policy the discovery doctrine was applied to the treatment of indigenous people from the beginning of the European colonization of America. The three-minute trailer featured this week is the introduction for a 43-minute video titled Doctrine of Discovery—in the name of Christ. This video illuminates the fact that we live on land that we took from indigenous people. European descendants benefit from a violent history of land grabbing and genocide that was justified by patriotism and religion.
